Plant love - pictures
Apr. 6th, 2009 05:51 pmI love plants, though I'm not that great at keeping them. So I look for pretty, easy to take care of stuff. Woo.

I was messing with the macro shot. I need to change settings somewhere so it comes out sharper.

These are my four cactus plants. I pretty much got them free :p Work discount and coupons.

Got this one, and the next one, at 70% off at a local small plant nursery. I'm hoping I can nurse it back to full health and get rid of those bad patches.

My other discounted plant. So pretty. I love the bright vibrant orange and the dark green foliage.

The bottom one is in the Dieffenbachia family, if I remember right. Don't let the cats chew on either of those, they carry (if I remember right) enough oxalic acid crystals to cause nasty oral and throat irritation. Odds are they won't want to, but still, just be aware.
On the whole, really nice plants for a low-medium light indoor environment. If the leaf tips start looking dried out or burned, it's either because they need to be rerooted or they need a bit of regular misting.
Pretty sure I got all that right. Used to be a Master Gardener for the MontCo (PA) Cooperative Extension, and I got TONS of questions on indoor plants.
If your place's bathroom has a window with a plant-worthy ledge, see about getting yourself a Coffea Arabica (yes, a coffee plant.) They like the filtered window light and the humidity. A lot. A WHOLE lot. Had one near my kitchen, by the "never any direct sunlight dammit" window - and 10 years later when we moved, I left it with a friend because it had hit 4 feet and started to bloom with REAL coffee beans! She still has it (near 15 years now) and it's around 5 or 6 feet. Too big to move to California, sadly, but it's still happy where it is.
